Built in 1886 by Virginian James Brent, who served as a deputy for Sheriffs Pat Garrett and John Poe and as Sheriff of Lincoln County between 1886 and 1888. His wife, Carlota, was the daughter of Captain Saturnino Baca, sometimes referred to as “the father of Lincoln County.” The Brent House was occupied by numerous Lincoln residents over the years, but it was in a sad state of disrepair in 1958 before being acquired by the State of New Mexico and restored as a residence for Lincoln Historic Site staff.
